GE-FREE SONOMA COUNTY

Protecting local farms and food from contamination by genetically engineered crops

GE-Free Sonoma County is a grassroots campaign to educate farmers, food businesses, and consumers about the risks of GE crops, and to promote sustainable local farming and food systems in Sonoma County.

We ran a very strong campaign in 2006 for a county moratorium on GE crops. Though the initiative (Measure M) did not pass, we reached tens of thousands of voters with our message, and raised awareness of the threat posed by GE crops to our local farms.

The fight has now shifted to the State Legislature, where we have twice defeated attempts by the biotech industry to "pre-empt" (overrule) local GE-Free ordinances. This year we introduced our own bill to restrict GE crops. It gained wide support before being tabled; we'll bring it back next year.
